Why You Are Breaking Out

There are a lot of reasons you might be breaking out. From humidity to diet, it seems like pimples just love our faces. Sometimes, we just can’t control the breakouts (especially if it’s because of genetics or hormones). Here are some ways you might be able to get rid of those pesky breakouts and get the glowy #nomakeup skin you’ve always wanted.

1: Diet

With the holiday season upon us, it’s easy to get lost in the gravy, the sugar cookies, and the hot chocolate. If you want clear glowy skin, you’re gonna have to turn away from the temptations. It’s painful, but it’s a sacrifice that’s worth it for many. I will say, some people don’t get breakouts from sugary and oily foods but nevertheless, junk food will definitely have a long term effect on the elasticity of your skin. (Sorry boba addiction) But if it’s a once in a while kind of treat, go ahead! Usually, eating lots of fruits and veggies with vitamin A like carrots, spinach, broccoli, and mango will make your skin brighter and happier. Don’t forget to drink lots of water too!


2: Not Enough Moisture

Believe it or not, having dry skin can also clog pores and lead to breakouts! Flaky dry skin will lead to an overproduction of sebum because the skin will believe it needs to overcompensate for the lack of moisture. That flaky skin could also get trapped in your pores and result in a pesky pimple! The trick is to gently exfoliate and balance your skin’s moisture level. Yet at the same time, make sure not to over moisturize or over exfoliate, because that can lead to breakouts too. Luckily, these two problems can be solved by all the chemically exfoliating toners out there! My current favorite is the Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner. It’s super gentle and moisturizing, but also gradually makes my skin smoother with the BHA. If you follow up with enough moisture as your skin needs, you’ll be all set to go.


3: Too Much Moisture

Balancing your skin’s sebum production level is tricky! If you have oily or combination skin, you don’t want to suck out all the moisture in your skin otherwise you’re going to have the “Not Enough Moisture” problems. It’s nice to do a few mud masks every now and then to take out some of the excess oil and cleanse the pores, but mud masks are usually not an overnight solution. A lot of people choose super stripping cleansers and astringent toners to dry out their skin, but the goal isn’t to have dry skin! As someone with oily/combination skin, it’s better to have a calming cleanser that will just take off the excess moisturizer without leaving the skin feeling like the desert. The 2019 pick for me is the Neogen Foaming Green Tea Cleanser. After a quick cleanse, I make sure to tone and moisturize so that my skin isn’t dry.

4: Dirty Towels and Pillowcases

You don’t think about it all the time, but we spend all this time cleansing our face just to wipe it on a dirty towel and then squish it against a dirty pillowcase? Yuck! Towels and their little fibers are practically breeding grounds for bacteria. Pillowcases are constantly in contact with the oils and sweat from our hair and can easily transfer all that nastiness to our faces. Try to wash your towels at least every week and wash your pillowcases every month! The pillowcases can go a little longer if you have two pillows and flip them to the other side.

5: You’re Too Stressed

I know, I know, you can’t control how stressed you are. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a total worrywart. Yet there are some ways to relax. First, think about your level of productivity. If your productivity is at 100%, I congratulate you on being a complete boss. If you have trouble procrastinating, think about ways you can reign it in; whether it’s setting a time limit for your work time, or making work time a part of your daily schedule akin to brushing your teeth or washing your face, creating rules for yourself to follow can truly have an impact on time management.

6: Not Enough Sleep

Part of being extremely stressed is not getting enough sleep. Neuroscientists have also found that not getting enough sleep can and will lead to more stress. Wow, that’s a vicious cycle if I’ve ever seen one. If you can’t increase the amount of sleep you can get, try to increase the quality. Make sure you’re sleeping in a very quiet environment with little to no light. Also try to avoid scrolling on social media before snoozing off. (I’m definitely guilty of this one!) Taking these measures may give you higher quality sleep so you can wake up feeling a little more well rested even if you have an intensely busy schedule.

7: You Keep Touching Your Face

If you do this, stop doing it! Your hands are everywhere and have so much bacteria on them. Your hands might be able to take it, but your face most definitely can’t. This goes with touching your face to your phone as well. You’ve heard the rumors about the toilet seats and your phone screen. If you haven’t, you heard that right. Your phone screen has more nastiness than a toilet seat. Don’t touch it to your face.

Might be a little hard to find them but the expiration dates are there!

8: Your Makeup Or Skincare Is Expired

If you’re going, “Makeup and skincare can expire?” I would run to your drawers right now and check the expiration dates. Even if the product is expensive, you might be hurting your skin rather than helping it if you are using expired ingredients. You wouldn’t eat a moldy apple no matter how expensive it was, so why would you put it on your face? Usually the products will have an expiration date or a tiny icon with how long the product can last after opened.

9: Your Makeup Or Skincare Contains Pore Clogging Ingredients

Some people hate essential oils, and for some it’s fragrance or parabens. Whatever it is, the safest option is to just go clean. If you know your skin is fine with essential oils and natural fragrance, that’s fine. If you know your skin is super sensitive I would give Pyunkang Yul a try. 10: Extra Tips

Now that you know many of the factors that could give you acne, here something for the dry winters! If you live in a city with hot humid summers and cold dry winters, you definitely want to invest in a humidifier. Not only have humidifiers saved my skin, they’ve also saved my throat and nose. My family is completely obsessed. We have all the sizes: gallon, liter, half liter, you name it. Currently, I love my Crane Mini Humidifier because I don’t want to be sprayed with the same water for days on end. I change it once when I wake up and once before I go to bed. It’s quiet and perfect for my desk.
